Box Score Denison junior Tory Danis (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) broke a scoreless tie six minutes into the second half. That one goal would be enough as the No. 22 ranked Big Red knocked off Allegheny College, 1-0, to capture the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship.
With the victory, the Big Red will receive the NCAC's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. This will mark the sixth consecutive year that the Denison women's soccer team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament and their 14th bid in school history.
The Big Red came out of the gates as the aggressor, taking five shots and five corner kicks in the opening 20 minutes of play. In the 10th minute the Big Red momentarily thought they had taken the lead when Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) sent a shot past Allegheny goalkeeper Emily Karr, but the far-side linesman flagged DU for their first offside penalty of the match.
Nine minutes later Danis would send a shot on-goal that would be batted away with one hand by Karr.
Denison would take an 8-5 lead in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks into halftime, but in the 52nd minute of play Danis would get another chance, and this time she converted.
Danis got the ball inside the Allegheny box and sent a shot at Karr that was saved. The ball was deflected back out into play where a Gator defender redirected the ball, inadvertently, back into the middle of the field. That's where Danis got in position and sent a shot into the upper right corner of the goal for the eventual game-winner. The goal was Danis' fourth of the season and her first in six career NCAC Tournament contests.
Following the Denison goal, Allegheny picked up the offensive pressure and would outshoot DU 10-2 over the final 39 minutes of play. Denison goalkeeper Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) would make two saves during that time span as the Big Red backline, led by Angie Coderre (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood Flossmoor), Jenn Sloan (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends), Haley Gewehr (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Alicia Blake (Clinton Twp./Chippewa Valley), kept the Gators off the scoreboard, resulting in DU's ninth shutout victory of the season.
Danis led the DU offense with five shots, four of which were on target, resulting in three saves by Karr. Clemmer took four shots and Karl posted three saves for Denison.
Allegheny was led in shots by Molly Waggoner and Ashley Lehr who each took three. The Gators outshot Denison 16-11 but DU held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Denison improves to 14-5-2 with the victory while Allehgeny drops to 14-2-4. This is Denison's second NCAC Tournament championship and their first since 2003. The Big Red will find out who their opponent in next weekend's NCAA Tournament will be on Monday (Nov. 8) when the entire tournament field is announced by the NCAA.
