The Denison Big Red suffered their first two dual meet losses of the 2010-11 season on Friday night when they dropped a tri-meet to Division I opponents, Ohio State University and Cleveland State University. The Buckeyes topped the Big Red 171-115 and the Vikings dispatched the Big Red 191-108.
Denison was led by senior Jake Lewing (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) who posted three, top-six swims. Lewing's best finish came in the 200 IM where he placed third with a time of 2:00.74. In the 100 breaststroke he placed fourth in 1:00.05 and he followed that with a sixth place finish in the 200 breaststroke.
In the diving events sophomore Gabe Dixson (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) turned in a third-place finish in the three-meter dive with a total of 295.73. That came very close to teammate Cody Smith's (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) six-dive school record score of 298.0 set in 2009. In the one-meter dive Dixson placed fourth overall with a score of 265.73.
In the distance events first-year Al Weik (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished second in the 500 freestyle in 4:43.76. He also took sixth in the 1000 freestyle. In the final event of the night the 200 free relay team of Matt Edgin (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Mike Barczak (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice), Joe Katich (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales), and Quinn Bartlett (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) closed out the meet with a second-place swim and a time of 1:26.95.
In addition to his lead-off swim in the 200 free relay, Edgin also posted a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly (53.60) while Bartlett placed sixth in the 200 backstroke and Katich and Barczak placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100 free.
Denison will return to the pool on Saturday (Nov. 6) when they host rival Kenyon College in their annual dual meet. This year's clash will take place in Gregory Pool on the campus of Denison University at 1 p.m.
