Box Score Denison shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and built up a 21-point lead at the break. That would be enough to defeat Earlham College, 79-58 on Wednesday night from Livingston Gymnasium. The victory is the first of the 2010-11 season for the Big Red men as they move to 1-1 on the year.
The Big Red got 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench from Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) in the first half. The senior forward led the North Coast Athletic Conference in rebounding a season ago and despite missing a majority of the preseason with an injury, Farmer looked to be in midseason form when he entered the game with five minutes elapsed.
Also helping DU on that first half run that saw the Big Red lead by as many as 24-points, was sophomore Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) who dropped in 13 first half points en route to a 28-point, seven rebound night. Hale is averaging 26.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg through the first two games this season.
In the second half the Quakers matched Denison on the scoreboard by shooting 42 percent from the field. Ryan Taylor had the hot-hand from outside, draining 4-of-6 from beyond the arc for a team-high 21 points. Justin Barger came off the bench to give Earlham 12 points and five rebounds.
Farmer played 24 minutes and posted 16 points, 13 rebounds and two assists. Junior guard Brett Tiberi (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished with nine points and a career-high tying seven assists in 27 minutes while junior forward Mike Garabedian (LaGrange, Ill./Nazareth Academy) posted 11 points, six rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes. The Big Red outscored the Quakers 44-12 in the paint while holding a 12-2 advantage in the fast break.
For the game, DU shot 48 percent (30 for 62) while out-rebounding Earlham 40-27. The Big Red knocked down 6 of their 15 3-point attempts and were 13 of 17 from the free throw line.
