Big Red edge Hiram, secure second seed in NCAC Tournament

Box Score

Senior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) logged two goals, including the game winner, and added one assist as the Denison women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 3-2 victory at Hiram College on Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Big Red secured the No. 2 seed in the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Denison scored inside the first eight minutes to take the early advantage.  Clemmer settled a throw in by sophomore Alicia Blake (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and served a ball from the right side to senior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor).  Hoskin settled the cross and buried the ball into the left side of the net.  The goal was Hoskin's sixth of the season.

The Terriers squared the match at the 29 minute mark when Olivia Dagg scored off an assist from Claire Conner.  DU regained the lead in the 41st minute when Clemmer settled a cross from Hoskin right near the end line just to the right of the goal.  Clemmer dribbled the ball away from the line, and ripped a left-footed shot into the upper 90.  The senior's 10th score of the season put Denison up 2-1 as the two squads entered the half.

Roughly 12 minutes into the second half Clemmer struck again, this time off an assist from senior Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore).  Oshita intercepted a pass, dribbled through five defenders and sent a through ball right to the foot of Clemmer.  From four yards out, the Hixson, Tenn. native chipped the ball off the sliding goalie and into the back of the net to give the Big Red a two-goal advantage.

Hiram's Breann Mason tacked on a late goal in the 86th minute to shrink the deficit to one (3-2), but Denison held on to pick up the victory.  Clemmer has scored a goal in each of the last four games for Denison.  In addition, she has also logged the game-winning tally in those four contests.

DU outshot the Terriers 18-6, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on net.  The Big Red also attempted eight corner kicks compared to just three by Hiram.  First-year goalkeeper Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) notched her 12th win of the season, while Emily Bristol made six saves in the loss for Hiram.

Denison (12-5-2) finishes the 2010 season with a 5-2 record in the NCAC.  The second-seeded Big Red will host third-seeded Wittenberg on Wednesday (Nov. 3) in the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.  Match time from Barclay-Thomsen Field is slated for 7 p.m.
