Clemmer's late goal sends DU past Bishops

Box Score

After firing off 20 shot attempts and forcing Ohio Wesleyan into eight saves, Denison senior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) broke a scoreless tie in the 89th minute to lead the Big Red past Ohio Wesleyan, 1-0 from Roy Rike Field in Delaware, Ohio.

Clemmer's goal came with just 1:04 left in regulation.  After regaining possession, Clemmer would secure a loose ball near the top of the 18-yard box.  She quickly settled the ball and fired a shot that sailed past OWU goalkeeper Hannah Zacharias and into the back of the net.  The goal was the seventh of the season for Clemmer who also tallied her third game-winning goal of the 2010 season.

Denison outshot the Battling Bishops 21-7 and kept the home team busy on the defensive end.  Over the final 18 minutes of play the Big Red attempted seven shots.  Just seven minutes before Clemmer's game-winner, Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) had a shot saved by Zacharias.

Denison goalkeeper Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) notched her sixth shutout of the season while posting two saves.  She turned away a shot on-goal by Chelsea Keller in the first half and one by Carly Topper with 13 minutes to play in the second half.

DU took five corner kicks on the night while Ohio Wesleyan took two.  Denison improves to 10-5-2 overall and 4-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the victory.  OWU drops to 4-9-3 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play.  The Big Red will return to action with a key regional match against Centre on Wednesday (Oct. 27) at 5 p.m. from Barclay-Thomsen Field.
