Late score lifts Big Red to victory in NCAC opener

Box Score

Senior Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored in the 88th minute to cap off Denison University's come-from-behind victory at Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon from Gambier, Ohio.  The Big Red edged the Ladies 2-1 in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener.

Denison controlled the first period as they outshot Kenyon 8-1, including four shots on goal.  Although they were trailing in the shot department, the Ladies logged the first goal of the game in the 56th minute when Courtney Hague scored off a rebound after Katie Fee sent in a shot that bounced off the post.

At 64:38, the Big Red evened the match at 1-1 when senior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./Baylor School) beat a KC defender and fired a shot into the far side of the goal.  Clemmer's game-tying goal was her team-leading fifth of the season.

Roughly 23 minutes later, DU took their only lead of the contest when junior Angie Coderre (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) sent a long ball into the box that was punched in by Oshita.  The senior's fourth goal of the season came with just 2:01 left in the match.  The Ladies failed to generate a shot attempt over the final minutes of action.

The Big Red finished the game with a 19-3 advantage in shots and eight corner kick attempts.  First-year goalie Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) notched her seventh-career victory and first NCAC win.  Clemmer finished the day with 11 shots including six on goal, which are both team highs this season.

Today's win in Gambier also marked the 200th victory at Denison for head coach Gail Murphy.  Now in her 14th season in Granville, Murphy has guided the Big Red to six NCAC regular season titles and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Denison improves to 7-3-2 on the year and 1-0 in the NCAC, while Kenyon drops to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.  The Big Red return to action next Saturday (Oct. 9) when they travel to the College of Wooster.  Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
