Box Score Allegheny's Nicole Mascia broke a scoreless tie in the 78th minute and that goal would be enough to send the 20th ranked Gators past the Big Red from Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio.
The Big Red had their share of chances and those scoring opportunities started early in the match. The first big threat came in the fifth minute of play when Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) set up the scoring chance with a cross to Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). Hoskin fired a shot that clanged off the post but first-year Jocelyn Festle (Park Ridge, Ill./Loyola Academy) was there to take a shot off the rebound. With the goalkeeper out of position, Festle's shot was saved by a sliding Allegheny defender. The loose ball went back to Hoskin who sent a second shot at Gator keeper, Emily Karr who was there for the save.
Karr would go on to post five saves in the first half as the Big Red outhsot Allegheny 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play. In the second half DU edged Allegheny 6-5 in shot attempts. In the 58th minute Clemmer's redirect off a Hoskin cross would be saved by Karr. Seventeen minutes later Clemmer got out in front of the Gator defense and was one-on-one with Karr before her shot attempt just missed the left corner of the goal.
With just over 12 minutes to play the Gators got on the scoreboard when Mascia's shot from the left side of the field went into the opposite upper-corner of the goal. The goal was Mascia's fourth of the season.
Seconds after Allegheny's goal the Big Red nearly tied things up when Hoskin fired a shot off the Allegheny crossbar.
Hoskin led Denison in shots with five. Festle finished with four shots and Clemmer attempted three. Karr finished with six saves for the Gators while Denison goalkeeper Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) posted two saves in her 90 minutes of work.
Allegheny improves to 12-0-2 and 3-0-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The loss drops Denison's record to 8-5-2 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC. The Big Red will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 20) when they host Oberlin College at 7 p.m.
