The Denison women's swimming and diving team resumed competition after a one month layoff against Division I, Ohio University and despite four Denison event victories, the Bobcats managed to send DU to their first defeat of the season, 175-125.
The Big Red were led by senior Olivia Zaleski (Corry, Pa./Corry Area), sophomore Laurel Brabson (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) and freshman Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, Colo/Regis Jesuit). All three posted one event win and Swanson and Zaleski were both a part of DU's winning 400 free relay team.
In the 100 butterfly, Zaleski, Brabson and Kate Rich (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) finished 1-2-3 in the final standings, led by Zaleski's winning time of 58.49. Swanson got her win in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.55. She also went on to place second in the 100 free in 52.01, while Brabson took the gold in the 100 butterfly with a time of 2:06.93.
Also logging two runner-up finishes was sophomore Hilary Callen (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) who touched in 17:33.45 in the mile and 5:06.17 in the 500 freestyle. Junior Ksenia Golovkina (Newton, Mass./Newton South) made her return to competition against the Bobcats and placed second in the 100 breaststroke.
In the both the one meter and three meter dive competitions, Sammie Salas (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary), Elina Stark (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) and Lizzie Litwak (Loudonville, N.Y./Albany Academy for Girls) placed third through fifth, respectively. Salas posted a score of 242.62 in the one-meter dive and came back with a score of 228.37 in the three-meter.
The Big Red will return to competition on Friday when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for a 6 p.m. dual meet with North Coast Athletic Conference opponent, Wittenberg.
