After posting a victory over Malone University on Friday night, the Big Red women's swimmers and divers returned to Gregory Pool on Saturday where they topped Grove City College, 167-119. The meet marked the final home meet of the season and prior to the competition Denison's six seniors were recognized.
The Big Red rolled to victories in each of the first 11 events before forfeiting the final five events to their opponents. Freshman Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) posted three victories to lead the way. She was a part of Denison's winning 200 medley relay squad along with Olivia Zaleski (Corry, Pa./Corry Area), Ksenia Golovkina (Newton, Mass./Newton South) and Kate Rich (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp.). That foursome touched in 1:47.68. Swanson would return to win the 200 freestyle in 1:52.78 and the 100 free in 52.44. All three swims were NCAA provisional qualifying times but none were season-bests for the first-year phenom.
In the 100 backstroke, Zaleski took the top spot with a time of 58.35 and Golovkina continued to improve after spending the first semester overseas. She won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:30.53. In the 100 breaststroke Gail Blachly (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) posted a strong provisional time of 1:07.91 and Emily Schroeder (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) won the 200 butterfly in 2:07.60.
Freshman Lindsay Zeberlein (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) took first place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.01 and sophomore Marit Wangstad (Wayzata, Minn./The Blake School) was a winner in the 50 free in 24.85. In the swimming events, Denison's final winner was Hilary Callen (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) who posted a time of 10:21.75 in the 1000 freestyle.
In the diving events, junior Sammie Salas (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) accumulated a score of 248.77 to win the women's one-meter dive. Freshman Elina Stark (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) placed third with a score of 220.05.
The 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 400 IM, three meter dive and the 800 free relay were not scored for the Big Red. Denison will close out their 2009-10 dual meet schedule next Saturday (Jan. 30) when they travel to Carnegie Mellon.
