Early goal is enough to send Big Red past Alma

The 20th-ranked Denison Big Red came away with their third 1-0 victory of the season on Sunday afternoon thanks to a goal by junior Kim Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) in the fifth minute.  That would be enough to send DU past Alma and run their record to a perfect 3-0.

Alma, who was coming off a 3-2 double overtime victory over Kenyon College on Saturday, got a work out defensively on Sunday against the Big Red.  DU took six shots in the first half and continued to put on the pressure in the second half with eight shots.  Despite a number of strong opportunities Denison just couldn't sneak in an insurance goal.

Luckily, the early goal by Oshita was enough to send DU into next Friday's clash with No. 17 Calvin with an unblemished record.  Oshita got Denison on the scoreboard when she followed a headed ball by Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends).  Alma goalkeeper Monica Witt made the save on Rusch's shot but the ball went off her hands and Oshita was in perfect position for the put-back.

In the second half junior forward Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) took three of her five shot attempts and had two of them result in saves by Witt.  Oshita also sent two of her seven shots in the contest on-goal.

Overall, Denison outshot Alma 14-2 while taking four corner kicks.  Alma did not attempt a corner kick and neither of their two shots were on-goal.  Big Red goalkeeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) improved her season record to 3-0 and bumped her career shutout total to 10.
