A goal by junior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) in the late stages of the opening half was all the Denison women's soccer team needed to pick up a victory over 23th-ranked Ohio Northern University on Wednesday. The Big Red edged the Polar Bears 1-0 as they improved their overall record to 7-2-1.
Ohio Northern, whose only other loss this season was to Calvin College, got a healthy dose of the Denison offense throughout the entire first half. DU held an 11-4 advantage in shots in the opening period which included a 7-2 edge in shots on net.
Of those 11 shots taken by the Big Red, the most important one came at the end of the half. Hoskin scored a breakaway goal off a Polar Bear turnover in the 45th minute of play. The junior's third tally of the season gave DU a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
In the second frame, four of Denison's six shots were turned away by ONU goalkeeper Kristen DeWees. Hoskin and sophomore Lauren Farell (Sylvania, Ohio/Toledo Central Catholic) each recorded two shots in the second 45 minutes of action. Four of Farell's five shots in the contest found their way to DeWees.
In addition to holding an advantage in shots, DU attempted nine corner kicks compared to Ohio Northern's one. DeWees finished the day with nine saves, while Denison goalie Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) logged four saves en route to her eighth shutout of the year.
The Big Red return to action on Saturday when they host Hiram College to open North Coast Athletic Conference play. Match is slated for 1 p.m.
