Oshita's second-half goal sends Big Red past CMU

It took almost 75 minutes but the 20th ranked Denison Big Red broke through with the go-ahead goal and that would be enough to hold off Carnegie Mellon, 1-0 in Tuesday night's season-opening match.

The Big Red held the Tartans to just one shot in the first 45 minutes of play but found themselves locked in a 0-0 tie at intermission.  In the second half, Carnegie Mellon's Elsa Wu sent a shot on goal that would be saved by Denison keeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula).  Wu would follow just over one minute later with a shot that clanked off the post.  At the 55 minute mark CMU's Katie Davis sent another shot on goal that would be saved by Cobb.

After the close calls by Wu and Davis, Denison would regroup and go on the offensive, taking the next four shots of the game.  That fourth shot would come off a through ball from freshman Korina Velasco (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage) to junior Kim Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore).  Oshita beat her defender one-on-one and gave DU the lead for good.

Denison outshot the Tartans 11-4 and held them to just one corner kick in the match.  Denison improves to 1-0 on the year and will open their home schedule this Saturday (Sept. 5) when they host Endicott at 11 a.m.
