DU places sixth at Miami Invitational

The Denison women's swimmers wrapped up their three-day stay in Oxford, Ohio with a sixth place finish out of 10 teams at the 2009 Miami Invitational from the Nixon Aquatic Center. DU finished with 919 team points which trailed only Illinois (1,004), Oakland (1,008), Emory (1,355), Florida Gulf Coast (1,438), and overall champion, Miami who ended with 2,321.

The Big Red's top time on Saturday night was turned in by sophomore Hilary Callen (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) who posted a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:59.20 in the 500 freestyle.  Callen, who is the defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion in the event, placed third overall on Saturday night.  She was followed by teammates Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and Emily Schroeder (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) who placed 10th and 15th, respectively.  Both swimmers posted NCAA provisional times in the event.

In the final race of the evening Callen and Swanson teamed with Marit Wangstad and Olivia Zaleski (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) to place fifth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:28.97.  DU started off the night with an eighth place showing in the 200 medley relay as Zaleski, Swanson, Gail Blachly (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Kate Rich (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township), hit for a 'B' cut time of 1:46.92.

After Friday night's school-record swim in the 400 individual medley, Schroeder returned with a 'B' cut time of 2:04.93 to place 12th in the 200 backstroke.  Overall, DU recorded 11 provisional qualifying swims on Saturday.  Schroeder was a part of one more as her and Rich placed 14th and 18th, respectively in the 200 IM.  Schroeder touched in 2:09.62 while Rich finished in 2:10.16.

The night's overall leader in 'B' cuts went to Zaleski.  In addition to her pair of strong relay performances, she placed eighth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.17, and took ninth in the 100 butterfly in 57.29 seconds.

In the diving portion of the weekend, Denison's Sammie Salas (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) and Lizzie Litwak (Loudonville, N.Y./Albany Academy for Girls) finished ninth and 10th, respectively in the preliminaries of the three-meter dive from the Calvin Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich.  Salas recorded a score of 320.30, just missing the finals, while Litwak posted a score of 269.45.

Denison will take a month-long break from competition and are scheduled to return to the pool on Jan. 5 when they take on Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
