Capital University's Tyler Munro shot 50 percent from three-point range to help the Crusaders to an 81-48 victory over the Denison men's basketball team on Monday afternoon at the Rike Center on the campus of Otterbein College.
The Big Red jumped out to an 11-point lead thanks in part to a 16-5 run to open the game. The spurt began with a three-pointer from senior Chris Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and was capped off at the 13-minute mark by a thunderous dunk by junior Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township). Farmer's dunk forced Capital coach Damon Goodwin to call a 30-second timeout.
The Crusader offense caught fire out of the timeout and scored 16 of the next 17 points en route to taking a 21-17 lead. Capital's surge was fueled by 11 points from Tyler Munro and five by Spencer Niekamp. After trading layups, freshman Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) hit one-of-two free throws and Farmer connected on a pair to trim the deficit to 23-22. However, Capital went on another run to build up a double-digit with 2:38 left in the opening half, an advantage they would not relinquish the rest of the contest.
DU struggled from the field shooting just 30 percent (15-for-50) while the Crusaders hit 28-of-63 (44 percent) from the floor. Capital also held a 56-27 advantage on the glass.
Farmer paced Denison with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks while Luther and Mike Garabedian (La Grange, Ill./Nazareth Academy) chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.
Capital was led by Munro's 17 points. Murno finished the day 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-10 from long range. DJ Frazier added 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks, while Niekamp also finished with 13 tallies.
The Big Red falls to 2-8 on the year, while Capital improves to 4-5 on the season. Denison returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 29) when they take on Smokey Ballenger Classic host Otterbein College. Game time in Westerville is slated for 8 p.m.
