In the annual dual meet pitting two of the top collegiate swimming programs in the nation, Kenyon College handed the Denison men's swimming and diving team a 145-92 loss on Saturday from the Kenyon Athletic Center in Gambier, Ohio.
Denison sophomore Phil Meyer (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) took first place in both diving competitions to lead Denison. He posted a score of 243.90 to win the three-meter dive and tallied 229.27 points to take home the win in the one-meter dive.
In the swimming events, sophomore Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was edged out twice by Kenyon's Ian Stewart-Bates. Thurston placed second to Bates in the 200 freestyle when he touched with a time of 1:42.83 while Bates earned the win with a time of 142:80. Later, in the 500 freestyle, Bates defeated Thurston by just .27 after Thurston touched in 4:41.60.
Sophomores Mike Barczak (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) and Robert Barry (Richmond, Va./St. Chrisopher's), along with junior Matt Edgin (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) joined Thurston with second-place finishes. Barczak was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.35 seconds. Barry placed second in the 100 backstroke in 51.39 seconds and Edgin touched in 52.07 to take home second in the 100 butterfly.
The loss drops Denison's dual meet record to 2-1. The Big Red will return to action next Friday (Nov. 13) when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a dual meet against Ohio State. The clash with the Buckeyes is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
