Big Red tops Transy; advance to NCAA's second round

Denison junior Eliza Miller (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Wellington) found the back of the net just 1:23 into their NCAA first round match-up with Transylvania and that score would end up being enough to send the Big Red to a 2-0 win over the Pioneers from Otterbein's Clements Field on Saturday afternoon.  The victory sets up a second-round rematch against host Otterbein on Sunday (Nov. 15) at 1 p.m.

Miller's goal came right after the Big Red were awarded a corner kick in the opening minute of play.  She played the ball near the right post and sent it past Transy goalkeeper Cori Hickman for her first goal of the season and the second goal of her career.

Nearly 51 minutes would tick off the clock before the Big Red would extend their lead to 2-0 when junior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) squeezed in a shot from the right baseline for her 10th goal of the season.

DU held their opponents to just three shot attempts on the day but all three of those shots resulted in saves by Big Red keeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy).  The Big Red took 15 shots and were led by Kim Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) who took four shots with two of those going on-goal.  DU also held a decided advantage in corner kicks, leading 10-2.

The Big Red has advanced to the NCAA's second-round for the fifth straight season.  Last year the Cardinals handed the Big Red a 2-0 loss despite getting just two shots on-goal.  DU will have their shot at revenge tomorrow at 1 p.m.  Follow the Live Stats or Listen to the Otterbein student radio broadcast.
