The Denison men's swimming & diving team picked up dual wins over Oberlin College and at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon in North Coast Athletic Conference action. DU defeated Oberlin 130-70 and OWU 146-61.
Against the Yeomen, junior Matt Edgin (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) paced the squad with three first-place finishes. Edgin won the 50 free with a time of 22.21, and touched in at 51.83 in the 100 fly. He was also part of the 400 medley relay team. Also recording multiple victories were juniors Chris Bagley (West Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice) and Jake Lewing (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), and sophomore Robert Barry (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's School) and Austin Vierra (Placerville, Calif./Ponderosa). Bagley, Lewing and Barry were the other three members of the 400 medley relay team that finished the event in 3:32.64. Bagley also won the 200 free with a mark of 1:47.69, while Lewing was victorious in the 200 IM and Barry took first in the 100 back with times of 2:02.93 and 54.85, respectively. Vierra won both the 1,000 and 500 free races. The sophomore registered a time of 10:16.08 in the 1,000 and touched in at 4:57.58 in the 500.
At OWU, senior Andy Catlin (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) and sophomore Mike Barczak (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) each won three events to lead the Big Red. Catlin won both the 200 and 500 free races with times of 1:46.75 and 4:55.56, respectively. The senior returned at the end of the meet to swim the anchor leg of the 400 free relay. Barczak kicked off the event as a member of the 400 medley relay team that captured first place with a time of 3:42.91. The Beverly Hills, Mich. native then returned to win the 50 free (22.16) and the 100 free (48.98). Junior Kyle Chabot (Washington, Mich./Stoney Creek) and sophomore Dan Thurston (Anna Arbor, Mich./Huron) each won a pair of events to help DU to victory. Chabot was a member of the 400 medley relay team and also earned an individual victory in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.13. Thurston logged a time of 4:19.33 en route to his victory in the 400 IM, and was also a member of the 400 free relay squad.
Denison returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 7) when they travel to Kenyon College for a classic North Coast Athletic Conference clash. First event is schedule to begin at 10 a.m.
