Second-half surge sends No. 17 Denison past OWU

One week ago the 17th-ranked Denison women's soccer team erupted for five first-half goals en route to a victory over then ranked Thomas More College.  Just seven days later, on the same field, the Big Red had a repeat performance when they scored five goals in the second half as they shutout North Coast Athletic Conference rival Ohio Wesleyan University 5-0 on Saturday night in Granville.

After 50 minutes of scoreless action, the Big Red exploded for three goals in a matter of nine minutes and 11 seconds.  The scoring onslaught began at the 50:12 mark with a header goal by junior Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) off a crossing pass from the right side by classmate Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./Baylor School).

In the 54th minute, senior captain Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends School) buried a shot from 18 yards out for her seventh goal of the year.  Rusch's tally came off an assist from junior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmor).  Just six minutes later Rusch netted her second goal of the game on a 30-yard bomb that found a home in the upper left 90.

Another Clemmer cross was headed in by Oshita at 68:22 for the Cincinnati native's 15th goal of the season.  Clemmer tacked on a goal of her own just one minute and 16 seconds later off a crossing pass from the left side by sophomore Tory Danis (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood).

Senior goalie Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) made just one stop en route to her 12th shutout of the season, while OWU goalkeeper Margot Klepetko made nine stops on the night.

DU improved to 14-2-1 overall and 6-0 in the NCAC while the Battling Bishops fall to 7-7-2 on the year and 3-3 in league play.  Denison returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 28) when they travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on the Tigers of Wittenberg University.  Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
