The Denison men's swimming & diving team kicked off the 2009-10 season with win at the 10-team North Coast Athletic Conference Relays. The Big Red accumulated 176 team points to claim their second consecutive title and seventh in the last eight years at the NCAC Relays.
The Big Red finished in the top two spots in five of the eight events, including individual event titles. The 200 yard backstroke team of Robert Barry (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's School), Kyle Chabot (Washington, Mich./Stoney Creek), Mike Barczak (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) and Chris Bagley (West Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice) combined for a time of 1:35.38. Bagley, Barry and Chabot and Matt Edgin (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) touched in at 1:33.49 to capture the 200 yard butterfly crown, while Chabot, Barry and Bagley joined Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) to win the 400 medley individual relay in a time of 3:39.21.
While the swimmers were busy at the Kenyon Athletic Center in Gambier, the Denison diving was competing at Gregory Pool in Granville. The duo of Phil Meyer (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) and Jared Scheck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) finished one and two in the one-meter dive with scores of 220.85 and 217.45, respectively. Scheck returned to capture the three-meter crown with a total score of 239.70.
Complete results of the event can be viewed at the link below. Denison will compete again next Saturday (Oct. 31) when half of the squad remains in Granville to take on Oberlin while the other half hits the road to challenge Ohio Wesleyan. Both meets begin at 1 p.m.
