A first-half goal by junior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) was all the 17th-ranked Denison women's soccer team needed to edge North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon College on Wednesday night at Barclay-Thomsen Field. The Big Red edged the Ladies 1-0 en route to their ninth-straight victory.
After just over 20 minutes of scoreless action, DU notched the only score of the game when Clemmer found the back of the net at the 21:39 mark. After receiving a pass from teammate Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), the junior weaved through multiple Kenyon defenders and unloaded a shot from the right side into the upper left 90. The tally was Clemmer's eighth of the season, and her seventh in the last five games.
Oshita had a chance to tack on an insurance goal in the early portion of the second half, but her high arching shot bounced just off the cross bar and over the goal. The Ladies responded with quality scoring chances, including a pair of shots by NCAC Player of the Week Caddie Durrett. However, the Denison defense stood strong and didn't buckle under the late pressure put on the Kenyon attack.
DU held a 15-2 advantage in shots, and out cornered the Ladies 9-0. Senior captain Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends School) logged four shots to pace the attack, while Clemmer finished the night with three shots. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) faced just two shots en route to her 11th shutout of the season, while KC keeper Kat Powers stopped five shots.
The Big Red improve to 13-2-1 overall and 5-0 in the league with the win, while the Ladies fall to 6-9 on the season and 3-2 in the NCAC. Denison returns to action on Saturday when they host conference rival Ohio Wesleyan under the lights at Barclay-Thomsen Field. The match is set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
