5/5/2026 10:02:00 AM

Cleveland, Ohio- Three Big Red earn North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors for their efforts in the final week of regular season competition. Baseball swept the awards with Eron Vega being named Player of the Week, and Andrew Montero being named Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his career. Rounding out the three awardees is Madilyn Moffitt, who earned her third Pitcher of the Week nod.

Vega, a sophomore from Evanston, Ill., played a crucial role in Denison's offense this past week against Ohio Wesleyan and John Carroll University. En route to the Big Red's 4-0 week, Vega was the most efficient at the plate. In his 13 at-bats, he recorded ten runs off of eight hits, resulting in a .615 batting average. His presence at the plate led to three walks, and he was hit by a pitch two times and once on base. Vega continued to do damage, going 2-3 in stolen base attempts.

Montero, a first-year from Upper Arlington, Ohio, earned his second consecutive Pitcher of the Week award, after posting an ERA of 0.00 in Denison's 15-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan. Across seven frames, Montero broke the program's single-game strikeout record by striking out 16 batters of the 23 batters faced. He gave up just one walk and one hit.

Moffitt, a junior from New Castle, Indiana, for the third time this season has earned Pitcher of the Week for her efforts this past week. She finished the week 1-1, after holding #12 Mount Union to just one run in Denison's 1-0 loss to the top-ranked team. Against the Purple Raiders, she pitched 6.2 innings, allowed one run, no walks, and struck out six of the 27 batters faced. She played a crucial role in the Big Red's second game against the College of Wooster to clinch the third spot in the NCAC Softball Tournament. Moffitt pitched all seven innings, gave up seven hits, gave up three runs, three walks, and five strikeouts in the Big Reds 7-3 victory over the Fighting Scots.

In the Big Red's 6-4 win over John Carroll in game one, senior Will Rettig became the all-time strikeout leader with his third strikeout of the game in the second inning. He tops the previous record which was set by Taylor Perrett in 2022, who had 233. Rettig finished the game with eight strikeouts, and now currently has 239 and counting.

Denison softball and baseball will be back in action starting Thursday for the NCAC Tournament. The softball team will be in Springfield, Ohio, and will take on DePauw at 10 a.m. for game one. The baseball team faces John Carroll in game one of their tournament at 12 p.m. in Chillicothe, Ohio.
