Denison Set to Host NCAA Baseball Tournament Granville Regional

Granville, Ohio - For the fifth-consecutive season, the Denison Big Red baseball team will host the NCAA Regionals in Granville, Ohio. Denison welcomes Grinnell, Cortland, and Kalamazoo to central Ohio for the double-elimination tournament. First game will be on Friday, May 15 at 11 am as the host takes on Grinnell, with Cortland and Kalamazoo facing off at 2:30 pm.

Denison comes into the tournament with a 40-1 overall record and riding the country's longest winning streak at 39 games. The Big Red clinched the NCAC automatic bid after defeating Wittenberg University 14-8 for their seventh-consecutive conference tournament crown. This will be Denison's seventh consecutive-appearance and overall appearance in the tourney.

The Big Red feature a slew of hitters throughout the entire lineup, with 10 of their 11 qualified hitters batting over .300 on the season. They are led by junior Jack Lutte, who hits a .484 on the year, which is second in the nation and has mashed 12 home runs and 15 doubles. His 58 RBI's leads the squad, and is ranked 11th in the country with an on-base percentage of .562. Senior Erik Sundgren also leads the charge, ranking 15th in the nation in doubles with 19 and posting a .387 batting average. Sophomore Eron Vega (.408) and Nate Lloyd (.400) are the other Big Red posting an above .400 batting average, and Kelly Crittenberger has 53 hits and 45 RBI's on the season.

The pitching staff has been surgical this season, as the main three-man rotation of Will Rettig, Robbie Lee, and Andrew Montero have delivered on the bump. Rettig currently allows the lowest earned run average of the three, posting a 2.33 which ranks 40th in the country. He has only allowed 18 earned runs through 69.2 innings pitched, and has struck out 60 in 12 starts made. Senior Robbie Lee has the second most starts at 10, and has pitched 54 innings with a 2.67 ERA and giving up 16 runs. He has struck out 65 batters on the season and allowed a .227 batting average against. First-year Andrew Montero has shown an impressive rookie campaign, posting the most strikeouts with 77 in just 45 innings pitched. He has given up 13 earned runs this season in 12 appearances, and leads the team in batting average against .139. His .87 WHIP currently ranks sixth in the country, and leads the nation in strikeouts per nine with 15.40.

Denison ranks top-10 in 17 team statistical categories, with most notably having the second-best batting average with .364 and leading the nation in earned run average at 2.74. They are fourth in slugging percentage at .581 and seventh in hits with 516. In the pitching department alone, the Big Red rank in the top-five in numerous categories, ranking second with eight shutouts, second in strikeouts per nine innings with 9.9, and second in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 3.46. They currently have the nation's longest winning streak in the country at 39 games, and most recently had their first trip to the World Series last season.

Grinnell comes into the Granville Regional with a 25-16 overall record. The Pioneers earned the Midwest Conference automatic bid after defeating Illinois College in the championship game 16-3. This will be the Pioneers first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Pioneers feature one of the best bats in the country in senior Connor Goodson. The Norman, Oklahoma native currently bats .408 on the season and leads the team in RBI's with 63 and total bases with 111. He has mashed 10 home runs, and scored 53 runs. The team leader in home runs, Wyatt Raymond, has put 13 over the wall, and ranks 24th in the country. Raymond bats .388, and is tied on the team in doubles with 15 and has 45 RBI's. Stuart Cash has been lethal in the box and on the basepath, stealing 27 bases and batting .384 with 11 home runs with 56 hits. Nikolas Ruden (.377) and Joe Chanis (.325) are the other qualified Pioneers to be batting over .300.

The Pioneers pitch a numerous amount of arms, with six throwing over 25 innings this season. Shea Goel and Jakob Runkel have been the main duo, with both starting a combined 19 games. Both have accounted for 39 strikeouts, with Goel posting an ERA of 6.90, while Runkel 8.57. David Haas is third on the team in strikeouts with 33, giving up 29 hits and 19 earned runs on the season.

Grinnell is one of the better scoring teams in the country and have some of the hottest bats, as they rank 15th in the country in slugging (.521) and 28th in scoring (9.4). Their .329 batting average ranks 39th, and their on-base percentage clocks in at 46th. They have won seven of their last eight games, and have outscored their opponents 89-53.

Kalamazoo enters the NCAA Tournament with a record of 31-11, and will be making their thor appearance all-time in the postseason. The Hornets earned an at-large bid and are in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA). Their most recent NCAA Tournament appearance came in 2022, with their first in 2016.

Senior Robert Newland leads the way with a batting average of .391, leading the team in runs (55), hits (68), total bases (109), and slugging (.626). He has belted eight home runs and has 47 RBI's, but also ranks fourth in the country in stolen bases with 40. Ryar Rinehart has one of the biggest bats on the team, leading the Hornets in home runs with 11 and posting a .331 batting average. He ranks top-20 in the country in RBI's (68) and sacrifice flies with seven. Austin Keur is second on the team in batting average at .373, and posts the best on-base percentage at .554 which also ranks 20th in the country. Cade Preissing (.364, 64 hits) and Alex Fenkell (.338, 38 RBI's) round out the top hitters on the squad.

The Hornets boast one of the best pitching units in the country, totaling a collective team ERA of 3.63, which ranks 11th in the country. Carson Orvis and Logan Lockhart lead the group, as both have pitched over 60 innings and have 12 starts a piece. Orvis leads with an ERA of 2.89, striking out 75 batters and only giving up 21 earned runs on the season. He has a record of 5-1, tying for most wins on the squad. Lockhart follows up with a record of 4-1 and an ERA of 3.39. He has given up 23 earned runs over the course of the season, and has struck out 52. Robert Ahlgren is second on the Hornets in strikeouts with 66, and has a record of 5-2 on the season.

Kalamazoo has had solid hitting throughout the season, ranking 25th in the country in scoring at 9.6, and 38th in batting average at .329. They blitz the basepath with a staggering 126 stolen bases, ranking 22nd in stolen bases per game (3.00). On the bump, they post the fifth-best strikeout-to-walk ratio at 2.91 a game, and have struck out over 350 batters.

Cortland comes into the NCAA Tournament with a 29-10-1 record, securing the SUNYAC automatic bid after defeating Oswego in a best-of-three championship series 4-3 to secure their spot in the tournament. One of the most storied programs in NCAA history, Cortland will be making its 34th appearance in the big dance, with an NCAA record 33rd consecutive appearance dating back to 1993. In that span, they were champions in 2015 and have made the championship game three separate times (2005, 2010, 2015).

The Dragons have some of the best bats in the nation, with junior Tristan Gatchalian leading the way with a .432 batting average, which also ranks 40th in the country.  He leads the team in hits with 60, seven home runs, and second in RBI's with 42. He ranks ninth in the country in on-base percentage at .569, and ranks first in slugging among qualified hitters at .669. Lucas Granger has some of the best vision in the nation, as the senior has 41 walks ranking eighth in the country. He also bats .400 with 54 hits and seven home runs. Talon Elkins is second on the team in batting average at .418, second in hits with 56, and has an on-base percentage of .494. Danny Jackson (.378, 37 hits) and Anthony Carlo (.372, 29 RBI's) are some of the other key sluggers on the squad.

In the pitching unit, Warren Miller has been the prominent arm out of the pen, making 12 starts this season with a 4-1 record. He currently posts a 2.82 ERA, only giving up 17 earned runs and striking out 69. Miller has an impressive batting average against of .158, and he ranks sixth in the country in hits allowed per nine innings at 4.80. The rest of the staff is spread out, with six others having over 20 innings pitched. Ryan McLaughlin has started four games and has a 2-0 record, making 13 total appearances. He has struck out 36 batters, and has an ERA of 3.55.

Cortland is one of the most balanced teams in the nation, as they rank sixth in the nation in both batting average (.349) and on-base percentage (.467). They score 9.3 runs per game, and have a slugging percentage of .494, ranking 39th in the country. Most impressive, they hold the nation's best fielding percentage at .983, limiting errors they commit.

The Dragons were scheduled to play the Big Red earlier this season at the D3 Showcase, but was canceled due to weather.

Denison will square off against Grinnell at 11 am, while Cortland and Kalamazoo will follow after with a 2:30 pm start. Saturday will feature the winners bracket game first at 11 am, with the losers bracket contest coming at 2:30 pm and 6 pm. The championship game will come on Sunday at 11 am, with a game if necessary to be played directly after at 2:30 pm.
