Granville, Ohio- The No. 19 Denison men's lacrosse team moves on to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship game after defeating the third-seeded College of Wooster 19-7 at home. The Big Red travels to Delaware, Ohio, to take on the top-seeded Ohio Wesleyan for the tournament title game. Denison and Ohio Wesleyan will take to the field at 1 p.m. The Big Red improved to 13-5 for the season, while the Fighting Scots bowed out with a final record of 9-8.
Despite Wooster scoring the game's first two goals, the Big Red answered emphatically with three goals to take the lead with seven minutes left in the first. The Fighting Scots would tie the game at three apiece at the six-minute mark. However, Denison turned up its offense and wrapped the first quarter with five more goals to go up 8-3. From then on, the Big Red ran on all cylinders, putting up five more goals in the second quarter for a definitive 13-5 lead. In the second half, Denison gave up just two goals while scoring another six on the other end.Â
Jack Hines scored four goals for the Big Red, followed by
Tommy Quinson and
Brady Monturio, who scored three goals apiece.
Collin Murphy and
Kevin Berutich each scored two goals, while
Michael Cassidy,
Lawton Corrigan,
Macky Peck,
Jacob Campen, and
Tristan Moss scored the final five goals. Facilitating about a third of the goals was junior attack Berutich, who dished out six of the Big Red's 12 assists.
Andrew Albert picked up his 12th win of the season after recording seven saves for the day, while Woosters' Case Lowery picked up the loss after tallying ten saves.
Denison dominated on the offensive end, outshooting the Fighting Scots 48-23. The Big Red's offense was jump-started by the 23-to-6 advantage held in face-offs. Although Wooster finished the night with a 16-14 edge in caused turnovers, Denison kept its composure when down and methodically found the back of the Fighting Scots' net throughout the game.Â
Today's victory marks the 12th time the Big Red men's lacrosse team has advanced to the NCAC Tournament Championships. Denison has made it to every NCAC tournament championship since 2013.
