Baseball Catches Fire Early, Takes Out Marietta in Shutout Victory

Marietta, Ohio- The No. 3(RPI)/No. 5(d3baseball.com) Denison baseball squad traveled down to Marietta College to battle in the season rubber match with the Etta Express. Earlier this month, the two blue bloods split a Sunday doubleheader in Granville, adding extra emphasis to win the season series. Denison came out firing early and took down Marietta in a 10-0 decision, moving their season record to 26-5.

The Big Red came out swinging early in the rubber match showdown with Marietta on Tuesday. A stellar defensive showcase, coupled with an explosive day in the box, propelled the Big Red to a 10-0 victory. After a scoreless first inning, Cade Nowik blasted a solo shot homer in the second inning to score the first run of the game in the second inning. Later in the inning, Jack Steel scored Jake Blozy with a single to left field. In the following frame, Eric Colaco blasted a three-run homer to grow the lead to 5-0. This marks Colaco's 28th career home run. He sits two behind the Denison career record(30). Steel and Nowik added another RBI apiece throughout the rest of the game. Alex Vasquez and Jack Lutte tacked on RBIs of their own to seal the win. Erik Sundgren recorded a triple, and Max Fishbein led the offense with a 2-3 performance. The high-powered offense forced the Marietta bullpen through six arms in the victory.

Sophomore Sam Larson got the start for the Big Red. The starter went 6.0 innings, allowed three hits, zero runs, and recorded 11 K's. Out of the bullpen, Ryan Paganelis, Max Mullen, and Eron Vega made appearances. The trio went 1.0 inning each and tacked on four more strikeouts, bringing the staff total to 15 on the night. With the performance tonight, the Big Red pitching staff has combined for over 300 strikeouts (313) through 31 games.
