Granville, OH — The Denison Big Red baseball team opened up conference play at home, hosting the Owls of Kenyon College for a weekend doubleheader. The Big Red, currently ranked No. 5 by d3baseball.com, No. 6 by ABCA, and No. 1 by Perfect Game, presents with a six-game season win streak and a 17-game series win streak versus Kenyon(5,109 days since Kenyon's last win). The Owls come in at 7-8, with their last action being a split doubleheader against Albion College. Game one's high-powered offensive showing ended with a 19-9 decision in favor of Denison. The Big Red kept the win streak alive with a 13-3 victory in game 2. The Big Red blasted eight home runs in the Saturday series.
Game 1 (Denison 19, Kenyon 9) (8 innings)
Denison's high-powered offensive attack led to a rewrite of the record book as well as a handful of balls lost into the outfield tree line. Between the two squads, 10 balls left the yard. Erik Sundgren and Eric Colaco had two homers apiece, with Alex Vasquez, Jack Lutte, and Jake Blozy tacking on their own shots. Sundgren and Colaco led the team with six RBIs apiece. Cade Nowik, Andrew Fazio, and Max Fishbein went 3-4 at the plate. Sundgren bumped his homerun total to 11 this year and moved his RBI total to 45. The explosive power from the Denison lineup forced Kenyon to use eight arms out of their bullpen. Â
On the bump, Nick Falter earned his 6th win of the season. Eron Vega and Manny Nager came out in support to close out the matchup. Nager picked up his 3rd save of the year. The trio combined for seven strikeouts on the day. The defense was perfect in support, recording zero errors in the field.
With an outstanding showing at the dish, Eric Colaco is now the all-time leader in hits in the decorated history of Big Red baseball. Additionally, he tied the career triples record.
Game 2 (Denison 13, Kenyon 3) (8 innings)
Jack Lutte and Jack Rollo stole the show in game two. Lutte went 4-5 with six RBIs and Rollo knocked a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the 8th to seal the deal. The Big Red took game two with a more methodical approach at the dish, racking up 12 hits in the eight-inning showdown. Eric Colaco, Erik Sundgren, Max Fishbein, and Alex Vasquez tacked on RBIs of their own.
Peter Lemke got the start on the bump for the Big Red. Ryan Starr and Michael Gray made appearances out of the bullpen. The group combined for nine strikeouts and allowed just one walk.Â
