Claremont, Calif.- In its first match of the Stag Hen Invitational the No. 4 Denison Big Red defeated the No. 13 Amherst College Mammoths 4-3 to keep their win streak alive. The Big Red moved to 8-1 for the season while the Mammoths dropped to 6-2.
In doubles play, Denison's
Ethan Green and
Kael Shah won their match over Edred Opie and Andreas Sillaste 6-1. Amherst would come roaring back, securing wins on court two and three, propelling them to a 1-0 lead over the Big Red heading into singles matchups.Â
In singles play, Denison's
Jacob Patterson on court three would knot the match at one apiece after defeating Aldiyar Abzhan 6-3, 6-0. On court five
Nick Meyers gave the Big Red a one match lead after beating his opponent in straight sets. Dension would grab a 3-1 lead after
Kael Shah defeated Amherst's Edred Opi in a tightly contested 6-4, 6-4 decision on court two. Not willing to go down easily the Mammoths' George Chaidemenos defeated
Mason Conlin in three sets to cut the Big Red's lead to one. Clinching the win for Denison on court one was junior
Ethan Green, coming from behind Green defeated Andreas Sillaste 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
Following the match Denison head men's tennis coach
David Schilling shared some thoughts. "It was a very tight match. I have a lot of respect for Amherst and their program. Our guys fought hard all day long, and Amherst took a lot out of us. We now have to turn around and play the number one team in the country, which will be a good challenge."
