Swarthmore, Pa.- The No.5 Denison men's tennis team finished on top, beating No. 9 Swarthmore College 5-2 in a top-ten showdown to kick off a weekend on the road. The Big Red reverse swept the final three matches to clinch the win over the Garnets, improving their overall record to 4-1, while Swarthmore drops to 2-3 for the season.
Swarthmore took two of the three doubles matches, with
Kael Shah and
Ethan Green at court one and
Jacob Patterson and
Colin Gramley on court two falling to their Garnet opponents 6-2, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. On court three,
Andreas Chapides and
Nick Meyers were the only pair to come out on top, beating the Garnet's Max Lindstrom and Richi Verma 6-3.
In singles play, Denison's
Jacob Patterson evened the score at one apiece, after defeating Max Lindstrom 6-2, 6-2 on court two. The Garnets would take its last lead over Denison for the day when Swarthmore's Michael Melnikov defeated
Ethan Green 6-4, 7-5 on court one. Shah came out strong in singles play, beating Rishi Verma 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) to knot the match up at two points each.
In their pursuit to secure the final three matches, the Big Red bounced back from behind on courts four, five, and six to ultimately secure its third top-ten victory of the 2025 season.Â
"Our guys fought incredibly hard today," stated head coach Daving Shilling. "It might not have been our best tennis and we certainly have some things going against us, but they stayed in battle the entire 4 1/2 hours. It is very tough to win on the road in other teams, indoor building, so to prevail 5-2 is very encouraging for what the make up of our team is. We cannot rest on our laurels, however, we have another match this evening versus a good Haverford college team."
