Wooster, Ohio- Denison women's basketball had dominant bookend quarters to lift itself easily past the College of Wooster in its 91-56 road win. The Big Red improved to 13-8 for the season and 6-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference matchups, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 4-17 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
It took the two teams a few minutes to find their groove in the opening quarter; thankfully for Denison, at the seven-minute mark, things started to fall, leading to a 12 to 1 run by the Big Red, led by sophomore guard
Abby Cooch and
Jess Zittel. After a strong first quarter, Denison would spend most of the second quarter trading baskets with the College of Wooster; however, the Fighting Scots had too much ground to make up from the first quarter and headed into halftime down 60-39.Â
In the second half, Denison's lead ballooned to 30 points after putting up 15 points in the first five minutes of play in the third quarter. The Big Red put the game away in the fourth quarter, maintaining their fast pace style of play resulting in extending their lead to 35 points, beating the Fighting Scots 91-56.Â
Four members of the Big Red finished with double-digits, with
Abigail Westmeyer pacing Denison with 20 points and a career-high seven steals. Cooch led Big Red in assists (5) and rebounds (6) and finished the afternoon with 15 points and five steals. Rounding out the double-digit scorers were
Jess Zittel and
Maeve Perry. Zittel scored 14 points for the day, going 4-for-4 from behind the arc while grabbing two rebounds for the Big Red. Perry scored 11 points, pulled four rebounds, and shot 100 percent from the field and free-throw line.
Wooster's leading scorer for the day was Mackenzie Riccitelli. She scored 17 points and tallied six assists against the Big Red, while her teammate Ellery Kloek scored 11. Denison's active defense played a crucial role in their dominant performance against the College of Wooster, outsourcing the Fighting Scots 46-11 points off of turnovers. The Big Red also showed their depth with the bench scoring 40 points to the Fighting Scots' 24.
