#20 Big Red Drop Season Opener to #3 RIT

Victor, NY- In their season opener, a late scoring surge in the fourth quarter wasn't enough for the Denison men's lacrosse team to come back from behind in its 17-13 loss to No. 3 Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The Big Red dropped to 0-1, while the Tigers moved to 1-0 to start the 2025 season.

RIT jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, dictating the game's pace from the first whistle. Denison, unwilling to go down easily answered a minute after the Tigers' second goal to cut the lead in half, however with every goals scored by the Big Red, RIT managed to score and maintain its lead. By the half, the Tigers led the Big Red 6-4 after outshooting Denison 25-17 and forcing 12 turnovers.

After a closely contested first half, RIT came out of halftime looking to score, ballooning their lead to as much as six heading into the fourth quarter. Despite being down by six in the fourth, the Big Red held the Tigers to just three goals and put up five goals to cut RIT's lead to four with just under three minutes left in regulation. With time not on their side, the Big Red kept the #3 RIT to 17 goals for the remainder of the fourth, resulting in a 17-13 loss.

Tommy Quinson led Denison in scoring, putting in three goals and tallying one assist. Michael Cassidy, Anthony Savoy, and Macky Peck each scored two goals across the afternoon. On the defensive end Augie Oberting led the team with two caused turnovers and would finish the day 10-for-23 in face-offs. Leading RIT's offense was Clifford Gaston. Gaston finished with five goals, one assist, and five ground balls. In goal for the Big Red was Andrew Albert, who recorded 17 saves for the day, just two saves shy of his career-high 19. The Tigers' Alex Zborowski finished the afternoon with five saves.

The Big Red return to Granville, Ohio, for their home opener against John Carroll University on Saturday, Feb. 22. The two teams will face off at 1 p.m. at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
