Westerville, Ohio - After consecutive losses in their last two bouts of action, the Big Red are back in the win column after Tuesday night's 72-68 triumph over the Cardinals of Otterbein. With the result, Denison bring themselves to 3-2, while the Cardinals settle at 5-1.
Junior forward Trevor Reed kicked off the scoring for the Big Red in a first half which never saw Denison lose their lead. Reed's early presence in the midrange was complemented by senior Aidan King catching fire from deep with three straight three-pointers to put Denison up ten with just under ten minutes to play in the first half. The triples kept coming, and by the end of the first half, the Big Red were 7-14 from beyond the arc. Denison's sharpshooting success afforded them a 43-33 lead at halftime.
The Big Red's offense took no time off to start the second half, coming out of the locker room firing on all cylinders. With 11:07 left to play, Denison held the biggest lead of the night at 18. The Cardinals fought back hard though, scoring 15 unanswered to bring the Denison lead down to just one possession. The Big Red managed to preserve their lead with a series of sunken free throws and defensive stops, keeping their composure through the final minutes of the contest.
Key Performers:
Not only did Reed lead the team with points on the night (15), but he also tallied 11 rebounds. It marks the second double-double of Reed's career.
King supplemented his 4-7 night from three with an impressive eight rebounds, which along with his two steals and one block demonstrate the senior's dynamic skill set.
Senior Nick Heath matched King's offensive output with 12 points of his own. Owen Giannoulias and Liam Taylor rounded out the top scorers for the Big Red, each contributing ten points to the effort.
Junior guard Jack Steinbach facilitated much of the Big Red's offense, leading the team with six assists.
