Denison Rolls Past Franciscan for Best Start Since 2019-20 Season

Steubenville, Ohio - A big 28-10 second quarter helped lift Denison over Franciscan 84-49, with multiple Big Red having standout performances. Hannah Grudzien and Anelly Mad-toingué led the way with 12 points apiece. Denison improves to 5-0 for the first time in six seasons, while Franciscan falls to 3-3. 

First Quarter: Both teams would exchange blows, as halfway through the first saw multiple ties and lead changes. The Big Red started to get hot after a 10-0 run led by five points from Adelyn Moore to get Denison out to a 21-11 lead. The Barons would fight back, cutting the deficit to six to give the Big Red a 22-16 lead heading into the second quarter. Guard Abby Cooch led the way with Moore, scoring five in the first as well.

Second Quarter: The Big Red could not have started any hotter, as to start the second quarter, Denison would go on a 17-5 run that would last six minutes, as the team would get scoring outputs from Violet Mitchell and Ada Taute to spark the run. Denison forced seven Franciscan turnovers, and had a 16-6 advantage in rebounding, 11 of them being offensive. Going into the half, the Big Red would lead the Barons 50-26. 

Third Quarter: With a comfortable 24-point lead to start the second half, both teams would trade buckets, but another mini 6-0 run highlighted by Anelly Mad-toingué picking up her 10th rebound of the night for back-to-back games with double-doubles. She finished her night with 12 points and 11 boards.

Fourth Quarter: Going into the fourth quarter up 67-39, Denison would keep up the offensive pace, scoring 17 in the fourth, with eight of those points coming from Hannah Grudzien. The Big Red also dished off seven assists, and had the largest lead of the game of 43 points going down the stretch, and Denison won their fifth-straight in Steubenville, 84-49.

Key Performances:
  • Grudzien and Mad-toingué each had 12 points to pace the team, and combined for 15 rebounds with Mad-toingué notching her second double-double.
  • Taute had an impressive day, scoring eight and dishing off eight assists with four rebounds, the leader in assists for both squads.
  • Moore, Violet Mitchell, and Isabelle McFadden each had nine points. Mitchell also added six rebounds as well.
  • Molly Dorighi added three steals on the night.
Team Highlights:
  • Denison had 11 different scorers tonight, seven of which had 8+ points.
  • The Big Red outrebounded the Barons 57-37, with 26 of those being offensive rebounds.
  • Denison caused 26 turnovers, and scored 38 points off of them. They also had the advantage in second chance points, 21-3.
  • It is the third time this season Denison has held their opponent to under 50 points.
  • This game marks Denison's best start since the 2019-20 season. That year, the team started off the year winning five-straight as well.
The Big Red will stay on the road and travel to Ada, Ohio, to take on Ohio Northern University this Saturday, November 22 at 2 PM.
