Columbus, Oh. - Following Sunday's down-to-the-wire finish against Carnegie Mellon, the Big Red dropped a midweek road matchup against the Capital Comets by a score of 78-67. With the loss, Denison fall to 2-2, while Capital improve to 4-0.
The Comets took an early lead with the first basket of the game, and never relinquished it. The two units traded baskets for most of the first half until 12 unanswered Comet points made it a 14 point deficit for the Big Red with 3:25 to go in the first. A series of defensive stops and an Aidan King three pointer brought Denison within ten as the first half buzzer sounded, with the score being 37-30.
The second half had a similar opening to the first, with neither team pulling away too far from the other, until a sudden offensive outburst allowed the Comets to extend their lead to as great as 21. Denison refused to let the opponent run away with it though, as the Big Red were able to charge back some with a 23-14 run to take the game to its final score.
Ultimately the Big Red were outmatched in a number of important statistical categories, though their 25 bench points offer an encouraging note going into next week.
Key performers:
Senior sharpshooter Nick Heath led the Big Red in points on the night, with a solid 15 off a 5-7 shooting performance. He went 2-4 from deep, and 3-3 from the charity stripe. Heath nabbed two steals on the defensive end of the ball, as well.
First-year forward Lucas Dickinson put together another impressive game, putting up 13 points alongside a team-leading six rebounds and a block and a steal to add.
Up next for the Big Red
Denison will have a few days off to recalibrate for a road contest against the Otterbein Cardinals on Tuesday, November 25th in Westerville, Ohio.
