GRANVILLE, Ohio (Jan. 18) — The Denison Big Red (10-6, 3-2 NCAC) outlasted the Hiram Terriers (9-7, 2-3 NCAC) in a high-scoring 86-77 contest Saturday afternoon.
In a game that featured six ties and seven lead changes, the Big Red leaned on a balanced offensive attack and a strong fourth-quarter push to secure the win. Denison outscored Hiram 25-20 in the final frame, sealing the game at the free-throw line with clutch shooting down the stretch.
Abby Cooch delivered a standout performance for Denison, leading all scorers with 26 points while going 12-for-13 from the charity stripe. She also added six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Violet Mitchell and Abigail Westmeyer each scored 20 points, with Westmeyer grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Mitchell shot an efficient 7-for-13 from the floor and added two steals.
Denison dominated inside, scoring 46 points in the paint compared to Hiram's 32. The Big Red also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 18 points off 15 Hiram miscues. Hiram's Brooke Hickman finished with 26 points and six rebounds. Isabella Caceres added 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. While Hiram shot an impressive 50.9% from the floor and 88.9% from three, Denison's ability to draw fouls and convert at the free-throw line (22-for-27) proved to be the difference.
With the win, Denison improves to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in NCAC play. They will look to build on this momentum as they head to Wittenberg University on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
