Field Hockey moves to 3-0 in NCAC with 4-1 win at Kenyon


GAMBIER, Ohio (Sept. 28) – The Denison University field hockey team scored a pair of second half goals to pull away for a 4-1 road win over host Kenyon College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon. 
 
Denison is now 4-5 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Kenyon falls to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC.  
 
The Big Red never trailed in its third-straight conference victory. 
 
Emma Gebhart opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in 6:13 into the contest. The goal was the conference-leading eighth of the season for Gebhart. 
 
Kenyon leveled the score at 1-1 with a goal in the early stages of the second quarter. 
 
Lila Smith gave the Big Red the lead for good with an unassisted score late in the second quarter. The Smith score came with 2:37 remaining until halftime. 
 
Denison put the game away in the second half. The Big Red wasted little time in making it a multi-goal lead, as they needed just 1:06 to make it 3-1 on Smith's second goal of the game. 
 
The Big Red tacked on a fourth goal when Kristin Kelley scored unassisted five minutes later. The Kelley goal strengthened the lead to 4-1. 
 
Denison held significant advantages in shots (27-6), shots on goal (15-2) and penalty corners (10-2). 

Gebhart and Smith finished with six shots apiece to lead all players. 
 
Athena Joannou recorded one save in 60 minutes of work to pick up the victory in goal. 
 
Denison returns to Deeds Field – Piper Stadium for a NCAC showdown with Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The game will serve as a rematch of last year's NCAC Tournament title game. Start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Granville.
