GRANVILLE, Ohio (Oct. 1) – A second quarter goal was the difference as visiting Ohio Wesleyan edged Denison by a 1-0 score Tuesday afternoon in a battle of two perennial contenders in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
The two teams have met in two of the past three NCAC Tournament Championship games. The last four matchups in the head-to-head series have each finished with 1-0 final scores.
Grace Ammon scored the only goal of the match. Her fourth goal of the season came midway through the second quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan held a 14-4 advantage in shots (7-1 shots on goal). Denison had more penalty corner opportunities at 7-5 but was unable to put much together on the offensive end.
Their best chances came in the third quarter. Following a nice pass to the left post, first-year
Maddie Gaines put a shot on goal from close range that was saved six minutes into the third. Three minutes later, sophomore
Emma Gebhart recorded a shot that went wide right of the cage.
Denison had four penalty corners in the fourth quarter but recorded just one shot over the final 15 minutes. The Big Red defense held strong in the second half to give the hosts a chance to find a potential tying goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Athena Joannou was credited with six saves during the 60 minutes of action.
The loss ends Denison's three-game winning streak. The Big Red hold a 3-1 record in NCAC play and a 4-6 mark overall. Ohio Wesleyan moves to 2-0 in conference play and improves to 8-3 overall.
Four out of the next five games are on the road for Denison, who is off until Thursday, Oct. 10 when they travel to Oberlin College. The conference game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
