Denison secures conference win at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio (Oct. 10) – The Denison University field hockey team scored three times in the second half to secure a 3-0 road victory over Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action Thursday afternoon.

The win improves Denison to 4-1 in conference play and 5-6 overall. Oberlin drops to 0-6 in the NCAC and 0-9 overall.

The Big Red held advantages in shots (23-0), shots on goal (15-0) and penalty corners (23-0).

Despite the differentials, Denison had difficulty finishing in the first half, leaving the game scoreless at halftime. The Big Red held 10-0 advantage in shots and recorded 13 penalty corner chances in the first half.

The Big Red broke through offensively in the second half. Sophomore attack/midfield Emma Gebhart wasted little time getting Denison on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Gebhart tallied her ninth goal of the season just 1:44 into the third.

Denison tacked on two more scores in the final quarter. Sophomore attack Reilly Desmond notched her third goal of the season to stretch the lead to 2-0 with just a little more than 10 minutes to play.

The visitors then scored again a little more than three-minutes later when sophomore attack/midfield Lila Smith found the back of the cage. Smith's goal was her seventh of the season. Her goal came off a penalty stroke attempt.

Senior goalkeeper Athena Joannou and the Denison defensive unit registered their third shutout of the season, all of which have come in conference play.

Up Next: Denison has the weekend off from competition. The Big Red will host DePauw in a key NCAC game on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Start time at Deeds Field – Piper Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
