GRANVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 21) -- The Denison University field hockey team celebrated its 50th year for the program in style Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over visiting Transylvania University in a North Coast Athletic Conference match.
The Big Red scored twice in each half as they rolled to its second-straight shutout victory in NCAC play.
After a scoreless first quarter, Denison needed just 34 seconds to get on the board in the second. The Big Red took advantage of a penalty corner chance to strike first.
Reilly Desmond notched her second goal of the season, as she deflected the ball into the cage following a strike from out top by
Emma Gebhart.
Gebhart scored a goal of her own. The sophomore was able to collect a pass from
Tabitha Chandler and score with three minutes remaining in the opening half of play. Chandler sent the ball in from just inside the top of the circle to get credit for the assist.
Denison added to its lead three-plus minutes into the third quarter.
Maddie Gaines was able to finish in front of the cage after a nifty pass from the left by
Lila Smith. The Gaines goal stretched the lead to 3-0 early in the third.
Gebhart tacked on an unassisted score in the fourth to close out the scoring. The goal was the seventh of the season for Gebhart, who has now scored in five-straight games.
Gebhart finished with two goals and an assist to pace the offense. Gebhart has a team-high 16 points this season.
Denison had a 27-0 advantage in shots with 16 of those being put on goal. Gebhart had a team-high eight shots while Desmond added five shots.
Denison moves to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in NCAC play. Transylvania drops to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The Big Red heads to Kenyon College for another NCAC game on Sept. 28. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Gambier.
Notes: Denison honored its alumni throughout the game in celebration of its 50th year. The program had more than 30 alums in attendance spanning back to the early 1980s. Following the game, Denison Associate V.P., Director of Athletics Nan Carney-DeBord presented head coach
P.J. Soteriades with a plaque in recognition of this being Soteriades' 25th year leading the program.
