NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Sept. 1) – The Denison University field hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to the University of Mary Washington in non-conference action Sunday morning in Virginia.
UMW improves to 2-0 overall while Denison falls to 0-2. The game was played as a neutral site contest at Christopher Newport University.
After a first quarter that saw just three shots combined, UMW picked things up in the second quarter with 13 shots. The Eagles scored a pair of goals in the second that ultimately proved to be the difference.
Mackenzie Proffitt scored off an assist from Emma Bernard at the 9:10 mark. Just about two minutes later the Eagles struck again. Ella Helbing registered a goal off a pass from Hannah Jadgchew to make it 2-0 with 7:09 to play before halftime.
Denison picked things up in the fourth quarter but could not breakthrough offensively.
UMW held advantages in shots (23-4) and penalty corners (8-3).
Emma Gebhart led the Big Red with a pair of shots.
Athena Joannou recorded nine saves in goal for Denison.
The Big Red hosts the University of Rochester on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m.
