GRANVILLE, Ohio (Aug. 30) – The Denison University men's soccer team fought through a scoreless draw Friday evening in the 2024 season opener with the visiting Stevens Ducks at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
In a matchup of a pair of 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament teams, the Big Red and the Ducks delivered a competitive strong brand of soccer for the full 90 minutes of play.
"While we would always like to find a goal, I'm really proud of the team's first performance tonight," said head coach
Brandon Bianco. "The guys played so hard and well together. We still have things to continue to improve on and this was a good first step."
Both teams finished with 10 shots while Denison held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Denison recorded the game's first shots when
Jake Krueger and
Jack Rice fired shots in the 11th and 12th minutes, respectively. The Big Red totaled four shots in the first half of play.
Krueger put a shot on goal that was saved in the 52nd minute. Denison registered corner kicks in the 55th, 68th, 81st and 87th minutes. The Big Red put another shot on goal in the 87th minute. However,
Kameron Kist's attempt was turned away by the Stevens' goalkeeper to preserve the scoreless draw.
Kameron Kist had the team high with three shots.
Tommy Prokos recorded a clean sheet in net with four saves.
The Big Red return to action on Monday when they play host to the Bethany College Bison. The non-conference match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
