SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (April 13, 2024) – Backed by six goals apiece from
Nate Kay and
Tommy Quinson, the Denison University men's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with its second conference win on the road so far this season as the Big Red defeated Wittenberg University by a final score of 24-10 on Saturday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field.
The score was 2-2 until a 4-0 Big Red run featuring goals by
Michael Cassidy,
Nick Vance,
Owen O'Neill and
Luke Fisher made it 6-2 with 3:17 left in the opening period.
Then in the second quarter, a 6-0 Denison run featuring three goals by Quinson and both beginning and ending with a goal by Quinson made it 12-4 with 4:33 to go until halftime.
Quinson, Fisher and Kay scored three straight goals to get Denison's lead to 10 goals (16-6) with 6:38 left in the third quarter before Kay scored the final goal of the third quarter and the first goal of the fourth and Fisher followed with another goal just 45 seconds later to make it 19-8.
Quinson would score two more times during Denison's final run, a 5-0 stretch in the fourth quarter that both began and ended with goals by
Jack Hines, who was one of four Big Red players with at least three goals overall.
Fisher (4 goals; 4 assists) finished with eight points while Kay (6 goals; 1 assists) and Quinson (6 goals; 1 assist) both had seven.
It was a career-high in both goals and points for Kay while for Quinson, it was his second time this season notching six goals and seven points.
For Fisher, it was his fourth game in a row with four goals and was his second four-assist game of the season.
Denison won 26-of-36 faceoffs, which was a season-high, was a perfect 17-for-17 on clear attempts, and led 41-15 in groundballs.
Colin MacLean was 15-for-19 on the faceoffs with 10 groundballs while
Grant Larson was 10-for-14 with eight groundballs.
With what was its 15th straight win against Wittenberg (5-4 overall, 1-4 NCAC) and fourth such win against the Tigers by at least a 14-goal margin, Denison improves to 8-5 overall and remains as one of three teams sitting atop the NCAC standings without a conference loss.
Next up, Denison will return to the field tomorrow to host another team called the Tigers (DePauw University) starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.
