LAKE NONA, Fla. (March 15, 2024) – The No. 25 Denison University women's tennis team concluded its Spring Break trip to Florida by returning to the USTA National Campus to take on Haverford College on Friday afternoon, and in the end, the Big Red came out on top by a final score of 5-4. It was the first-ever matchup between Denison (7-5 overall) and Haverford (4-2), which is receiving votes in the ITA Coaches Poll.
Dasha Chistyakova and
Maia Nowicki quickly fell 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, but Denison was able to win 8-3 at both No. 2 (
Caroline Lopez and
Kendall Schrader) and No. 3 (
Peyton Oda and
Caroline Kittle) doubles to take a 2-1 lead for the third match in a row.
Denison then fell behind 3-2 after the first two singles matches in the No. 5 and No. 2 spots, but got a 7-5, 6-0 win from Kittle at No. 3 singles to tie it.
In what was potentially the deciding match, Lopez pulled out a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) win in a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to give the Big Red the lead back, and then a 7-5, 6-1 win by
Anna Leach at No. 6 singles clinched the win.
In the final singles match at the No. 1 spot, Oda came up short in a third-set super tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-1).
Up next, the Big Red will return to North Coast Athletic Conference action for a pair of road matches at Ohio Wesleyan University (Mar. 27) and Wittenberg University (Mar. 28).
