ORLANDO, Fla. (March 13, 2024) – The No. 25 Denison University women's tennis team continued its Spring Break action in Florida late on the night of Tuesday, March 12, with an 8-1 win over Franklin & Marshall College. It was only the second all-time meeting between the Big Red and the Diplomats and was the first since 1992, a 7-2 win for Denison.
For the second night in a row, Denison led 2-1 after doubles as
Peyton Oda and
Caroline Kittle defeated Lorena Saavedra and Amelia Squires 8-2 at No. 2 doubles while
Anna Leach and
Kendall Schrader won 8-3 over Kathryn Colclough and Presley Daggett at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles,
Caroline Lopez and
Dasha Chistyakova fell 8-6 against Mackenzie Sherman and Sophia Rhazali, but then Chistyakova won the first singles match to finish with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Rhazali at No. 2 singles, making it a 3-1 Big Red lead.
The team win for Denison then came as
Elizabeth Hoo won 6-4, 6-1 over Colclough at No. 6 singles and Lopez won 6-3, 6-3 over Squires at No. 4 singles.
Leach pulled out a win in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6), over Saavedra at No. 5 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Kittle closed out a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over Rebecca Bellick, and then the final match saw Oda win in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8), over Sherman at No. 1 singles.
Denison earns its fourth straight win in Florida and gets to above .500 for the first time on the season at 6-5 while F&M falls to 1-5 on the year.
On the final day of its Spring Break trip to Florida on Friday, March 15, Denison will take on Haverford College for the first time in program history starting at 12 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
