LAKE NONA, Fla. (March 10, 2024) – The No. 25 Denison University women's tennis team started off its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 7-2 win against the University of Rochester before returning to the court at the USTA National Campus to take down Birmingham-Southern College by a score of 9-0.
In what was the first meeting between Denison (4-5 overall) and Rochester (2-3) since 2002, a 7-2 win for the Yellowjackets, the Big Red won the first doubles match to finish with an 8-3 victory by
Kendall Schrader and
Caroline Lopez over Lauren Kallas and Neha Dania at the No. 2 spot.
Maia Nowicki and
Dasha Chistyakova were able to pull out a hard-fought 8-7 (8-6) tiebreak win at No. 1 doubles over Josephine Libby and Sanjana Karnam to give the Big Red a 2-1 lead, and then in the singles, Denison cruised in the fourth, fifth and sixth spots. Lopez defeated Jasmin Toor 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, Nowicki defeated Dania 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Schrader won 6-0, 6-2 over Jaclyn Dron in the six-spot.
Lastly,
Peyton Oda also won 6-2, 6-2 against Karnam at No. 2 singles while
Caroline Kittle fell 6-2, 6-3 against Libby, the No. 33-ranked singles player in NCAA Division III, at the top spot.
Then its first-ever meeting against Birmingham-Southern College (2-4), Denison won each of the three doubles matches by a score of 8-0 while Kittle won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and
Anna Leach was victorious 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to clinch the match.
On day two of its Spring Break trip on Monday, March 11, Denison will take on North Central College at 6 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
