GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 4, 2024) – Playing in the first-ever Big Red Invitational this weekend, the No. 28 Denison University women's squash team fell 6-3 against the University of Chicago on Saturday. The Big Red then played two matches on Sunday, coming up short by just one point, 5-4, against Washington University in St. Louis before losing 6-3 again in a rematch with the Maroons.
In the first matchup against Chicago on Saturday,
Kate Manderlink and
Virginia Lawrence both earned 3-0 wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively, while
Chloe Sigg earned a 3-1 (12-10, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7) victory at the No. 5 seed. The deciding match came at the No. 2 seed as
Esme Adelman fell just short in her final set against Tara Chugh, dropping a 3-2 (11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7) decision.
Anna Leach made her Big Red squash debut as the No. 7 seed against the Maroons and won her first-career set with an 11-7 victory in her third set. Then on Sunday, Leach won her first set against Washington University in St. Louis' (WashU) Samantha Solomon before falling 3-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-3), giving her a set-victory in each of her first two career matches.
Following 3-0 wins against WashU by Adelman and Manderlink at the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, Lawrence earned a 3-2 (11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 3-11, 11-7) win over Lily Lippert at the No. 4 seed to tie the match at 3-3. Unfortunately,
Antoinette Ramsey fell 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6) against Lily Levitzky at the No. 1 seed as Denison lost a 4-3 decision.
In Denison's final match against Chicago, Leach nearly pulled out her first-career win but instead came up just short, 3-2 (7-11, 11-7, 3-11, 12-10, 11-9), against Amina Helmy. Manderlink (No. 3 seed) and Lawrence (No. 4 seed) both earned their third win of the weekend with 3-0 victories while Sigg (No. 5 seed) defeated Kavya Krishnamurthy by a score of 3-1 for the second time on the weekend.
Denison concludes its 2023-24 regular season with a record of 5-9, and with the postseason up next, the Big Red will prep for the start of the Liberty League Championship, scheduled for February 9-11 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. This year, the Liberty League features seven teams, including Denison, Bard, Haverford, Mount Holyoke, St. Lawrence, Vassar, and William Smith.
