GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 17, 2024) – The No. 14 Denison University men's lacrosse team had the privilege of hosting the first-ever game inside the brand new Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium by welcoming the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday. In the end, the Big Red fell by a final score of 22-8 against the Tigers, who in addition to ranking No. 3 in NCAA Division III, are receiving a pair of first-place votes in the week two edition of the USILA / Blatant Lacrosse 2024 Men's Coaches Division III Poll.
Denison scored first less than two minutes in on a goal by senior
Jack Chace, who also scored Denison's second goal to make it 10-2 just over five minutes into the second quarter.
Also scoring twice for the Big Red was senior
Luke Fisher and junior
Tommy Quinson while Fisher led the way with three points.
Fisher, a two-time North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year selection, also led all players with 12 shots and six shots on goals.
Despite the outcome, Denison was only outshot 51-43 and forced 19 RIT turnovers while also finishing with two more groundballs (41-39) than the Tigers and outscoring them 3-2 in the final period.
Five of RIT's goals were man-up goals, including three by a 2024 USILA Preseason All-American in junior Clifford Gaston.
RIT was the back-to-back NCAA Division III National Champion in 2021 and 2022. RIT finished with a 21-2 record in 2023, winning its 12th consecutive Liberty League title. The Tigers made their 25th NCAA Tournament appearance and 14th straight, advancing to the semifinals for the 13th time in program history. RIT also returns nine of its top-10 scorers from 2023.
The Big Red are now 6-2 all-time against the Tigers, but fell 13-12 in overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in their most recent meeting in 2011 when RIT was ranked No. 2 in the country.
Denison will hit the road and head to Michigan for its next game on Saturday, February 24, as the Big Red battle Albion College starting at 3 p.m. Led by eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) from Fisher, the Big Red defeated the Britons 21-13 at home last season in what was their final nonconference game of the season.
