No. 27 women’s squash goes 1-1 during opening day of CSA Team Championships

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (February 16, 2024) – The No. 27 Denison University women's squash team participated in the first two rounds of the Walker Cup division at the 2024 College Squash Association (CSA) Divisional Team Championships held this weekend at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia. In the end, the seventh-seeded Big Red opened up the championship with a 9-0 win over No. 30-ranked and 10th-seeded Mount Holyoke College in the round of 16 before falling 9-0 themselves to No. 22-ranked and second-seeded Franklin and Marshall College in the quarterfinals.

Denison swept all nine matches against Mount Holyoke as Lane Harding and Virginia Lawrence both gave up only seven points in their wins at the No. 4 and No 5 seeds, respectively, while Charlotte Sigg only gave up eight points in her win at the No. 6 seed.

Hannah Best dominated in an 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 victory at the No. 7 seed, as did Chloe Sigg in an 11-0, 11-0, 11-3 win at the No. 8 seed.

The clinching win for the Big Red against Lyons came from Golda Mehl with a 12-10, 11-7, 11-5 win at the No. 9 seed.

Against F&M, Harding earned a win in extra scoring in the first set before ultimately falling 3-1 (10-12, 11-0, 11-8, 11-4) to Zarine Gidwaney at the No. 4 seed. In addition, Esme Adelman fell 3-1 (11-5, 11-3, 12-14, 11-3) to Aryaa Ogale at the No. 2 seed while Best lost 3-1 (11-8, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6) to Iman Jaikishan at the No. 7 seed.

Denison (8-11 overall) earned its second 9-0 win over Mount Holyoke (7-11) in as many seasons but also fell 9-0 to F&M (7-14) for the second time this year.

Now in the second consolation bracket semifinals of the Walker Cup, the Big Red will return to action on Saturday, February 17, for the second day of CSA Nationals. Denison will take on No. 26-ranked and sixth-seeded Connecticut College at 3:30 p.m. with the winner going to the second consolation bracket finals. Connecticut College defeated No. 31-ranked and eighth-seeded Vassar College 9-0 in the round of 16 before falling 6-3 to No. 23-ranked and third-seeded Chatham University in the main bracket quarterfinals.
