Women’s squash advances to third-place match at Liberty League Championship

CANTON, N.Y. (February 10, 2024) – Just as it did in its first appearance in the Liberty League Championship last year, the Denison University women's squash team started off the championship with a victory over Vassar College before falling against St. Lawrence University in its second match of the day. This time around, the No. 28-ranked and third-seeded Big Red defeated No. 31-ranked and sixth-seeded Vassar 9-0 in the quarterfinals before coming up short, 8-1, against No. 25-ranked and second-seeded St. Lawrence in the semifinals. With a record of 1-1, the Big Red will play in the third-place match during the championship round on Sunday.

Charlotte Sigg got the day started with an easy 3-0 (11-1, 11-1, 11-2) win at the No. 6 seed against Vassar, and was followed by another 3-0 (11-2, 11-9, 11-2) win by Kate Manderlink at the No. 3 seed. Denison then made it a 4-0 lead as Lane Harding won 3-0 (11-3, 1-0, 11-4) at the No. 4 seed and Antoinette Ramsey won 3-1 (11-6, 11-8, 12-14, 11-1) at the No. 1 seed.

Virginia Lawrence won 3-0 (11-3, 11-1, 11-2) at the No. 5 seed and Esme Adelman won 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-5) at the No. 2 seed to close out the win against Vassar.

Adelman then improved to 2-0 on the day after winning her first two sets and overcoming losses in the third and fourth sets to pick up Denison's lone win against St Lawrence, 3-2 (11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7), over Ulrikke Bore Ribesen. Harding (No. 4 seed) and Lawrence (No. 5 seed) both won their second sets by a score of 11-6 to force four sets against St. Lawrence.

Denison will take on No. 29-ranked and fourth-seeded Haverford College in the third-place match starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 11. Haverford defeated No. 30-ranked and fifth-seeded Mount Holyoke College 8-1 in the quarterfinals before falling 9-0 to No. 14-ranked and top-seeded William Smith College in the semifinals.
