GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 3, 2023) – An early penalty kick goal by the Pioneers was not enough to stop the Denison University men's soccer team as the Big Red prevailed over Transylvania University by a final score of 3-1 on Sunday at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Transylvania's penalty kick goal came from Henry Roetker in the ninth minute for the opening goal of the match, but in the 25th minute, junior
Jake Krueger got the Big Red on the board after the assist by senior
Rohan Tripathy.
Denison outshot Transylvania 13-3 in the first half and then saw
Kameron Kist, a sophomore transfer from Loyola University Chicago, score his first career goal as a member of the Big Red in the 52nd minute.
That score then held until the final 30 seconds of the match when Krueger kept the ball in play with a nice touch on the left side of the field and took the ball straight toward the goal. Kist and junior
Cameron McIntosh brought the numbers and set themselves up for a 3-v-1 situation as options across the middle and back post for Krueger. Ultimately, Krueger broke a step away from his defender and fired a shot over and away from the hands of the keeper into the right-side corner of the net.
It was a great day for Krueger, who just two days after recording an assist on both of Denison's goals in a 2-0 win on Friday, put both of his shot attempts on Sunday into the back of the net.
Kist and McIntosh both led the team with four total shot attempts while freshman
Tyler Weiss recorded three shot attempts off the bench.
In all, the Big Red outshot the Pioneers 21-9 overall and 10-3 on goal en route to improving to 2-0 on the season and watching Transylvania fall to 0-2.
Junior
Zach Barr made the start in goal for Denison and made two saves while playing all 90 minutes and picking up his second career win.
Head Coach
Brandon Bianco spoke after the win, saying "Rarely are second games of an opening weekend the prettiest, but credit to the guys for grinding out tonight. We had to respond to adversity early and keep plugging to find the goals we needed. It was a good step forward for this group."
Next up, Denison will play on the road for the first time this season, taking on Marietta College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 6.
