MARIETTA, Ohio (September 6, 2023) – The Denison University men's soccer team played its first road match of the new 2023 season on Wednesday night and finished with a 1-0 win over Marietta College.
After a halftime lightening delay,
Jake Krueger scored his third goal of the season less than four minutes into the second half, taking the assist from
Ben Goeller and netting the lone goal of the match.
That was all
Tommy Prokos and the rest of the Big Red defense needed to pickup the shutout as they limited the Pioneers to just five shots.
Prokos made four saves on the night while Krueger led the way with five total shots and three shots on goal and
Corey Brunner fired four shot attempts.
Krueger nearly found the back of the net again in the 75th and 79th minutes if not for saves by Marietta's Joey Backhaus, who made six saves in the second half while Prokos made three.
Denison was relentless late in the second half as
Cameron McIntosh's attempt was saved in the 82nd minute and Brunner's was blocked in the 86th.
The final shot for Marietta, meanwhile, came in the 69th minute on the final save by Prokos.
Head Coach
Brandon Bianco said, "Road games in college soccer are never easy, especially midweek. It was a really good second half tonight which allowed us to find the goal. I would have loved a second, but I'm proud of the second 45 minutes that we played."
Denison improves to 3-0 on the season with 10 straight one-goal wins against Marietta since 1999. The Pioneers, meanwhile, suffered their first loss of the season at 1-1-1.
Wednesday marked the first of three straight road matches for Denison in three different stats as the Big Red now head to Grove City College for a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday, September 9, in Grove City, Pennsylvania.
