GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 13, 2023) – The No. 13 nationally-ranked Denison University men's lacrosse team scored six goals in the fourth quarter to pull away from Illinois Wesleyan University late and earn a 15-10 victory over the Titans on Saturday during the second round of the NCAA Tournament inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Denison led by just one goal (9-8) entering the fourth quarter and saw Illinois Wesleyan tie it at 9-9 on the sixth and final goal of the game by Gage Black with 9:37 left to play.
Fortunately for the Big Red,
Colin MacLean won the ensuing faceoff and
Zach Kasun picked up the groundball, leading to a goal by
Lawton Corrigan assisted by
Tommy Quinson just 28 seconds after IWU tied it.
That started a 4-0 Denison run to take control of the game as an interception by
Brooks Crowley led to a goal by Quinson assisted by
Andrew Brim with 8:17 remaining, and then after
Grant Larson won the next faceoff and Kasun again picked up the groundball,
Luke Fisher scored his fourth goal of the game with 6:56 to go.
The final goal of Denison's run came from
Will Kenney assisted by Corrigan with 5:20 on the clock.
After a goal by IWU with 4:12 remaining to try and stop the bleeding, a carless turnover by the Titans picked off by
Ethan Tyack led to a goal by
Jack Hines assisted by
Clyde Bresnahan with just over three minutes left.
MacLean won the final faceoff and Brim scooped up the ground ball before Tyack scored his lone goal of the game with 1:35 left to wrap up the scoring.
Fisher finished with four goals for the Big Red while Quinson (2 goals, 2 assists) and Tyack (1 goal, 3 assists) both matched him with four points.
Hines (2 goals, 1 assist) and O'Donnell (1 goal, 2 assists) both finished with three points while Kenney (2 goals) and Corrigan (1 goal, 1 assist) both had two points.
With the win, Denison improved to 17-3 overall, won its 10th game in a row and improved to 11-1 at home this season to advance to the NCAA Third Round (Sweet Sixteen) for the second season in a row under the direction of Head Coach
Eric Koch. The Big Red will now face the No. 11 nationally-ranked University of Lynchburg at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 14. Lynchburg is currently 14-6 and won 11-10 in overtime over St. John Fisher University in the second game hosted at Denison on Saturday.
